ASE Listed in Channel NewsAsia Sustainability Ranking for Asia’s Top Businesses

The Top 100 list is the first of its kind in Asia that identifies leading firms in corporate sustainability.

Taipei, September 24, 2014 – Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. (TAIEX: 2311, NYSE: ASX) announced today that it has been ranked number 75 amongst the Top 100 sustainable companies in Asia in a new index launched by Channel NewsAsia in partnership with CSR Asia and Sustainalytics.

The CNA ranking is the first of its kind in Asia that recognizes leading companies in the region who have excelled in corporate sustainability. The ranking lists the 100 most sustainable companies in the region including China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. The companies are selected based on research conducted by Sustainalytics, an award-winning, global sustainable investment research firm. Sustainalytics’ analytical framework broadly addresses three themes: environment, social, and governance. Between 75 and 120 indicators were used to assess each company.

‘ASE is honored to be amongst the Top 100 sustainability list and also to be recognized for the diligent efforts in incorporating sustainability in our business model. Our sustainability programs have gained great momentum and the results are yielding positive social and environmental impacts as well as compliance with international standards,’ says Dr Tien Wu, Chief Operating Officer of the ASE Group.

During 2013, ASE invested $25 million in a water recycling plant at ASE Kaohsiung’s K14. This will be Taiwan’s first water recycling plant that is capable of treating 20,000 metric tons of wastewater and producing at least 10,000 metric tons of purified recycled water daily. The water recycling plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2015 Q1. When K14 operates at full capacity, the Kaohsiung facilities' wastewater discharge will be reduced by more than 3.6M metric tons per year, which is equivalent to 1440 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water.

Over the past few years, ASE began constructing new factories in accordance to green standards and have been awarded international certification. In 2013, ASE K12 achieved the LEED Platinum certification, the highest possible rating from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The ASE K12 building is the world’s first semiconductor assembly and test facility to be accorded the double certification of both EEWH Diamond and LEED Platinum. Going forward, ASE will progressively upgrade current buildings to green standards.

ASE also contributes actively to the local community where it operates in. For example, in the recent gas explosion incident in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the company set up a crisis response center immediately to lend medical, accommodation and financial assistance to affected employees and their families. ASE also helped sponsor and install LED lights in common areas for those residents living in the affected zone which had suffered significant damages. LED lights consume less electricity and offer the residents a well-lit and safer environment at night.

As an industry leader, ASE is also the first company in Asia to issue Green Bonds to raise $300 million to improve energy and water efficiency. This effort is part of ASE’s comprehensive corporate social responsibility to incorporate sustainability programs in our business model and leveraging on its technological advances to benefit its employees, the community and the environment.
