ASE Environmental and Sustainability Foundation Launches Ecological Restoration Initiative

The ASE Environmental and Sustainability Foundation launched a multi-site restoration initiative in April, implementing ecological restoration and afforestation projects at Mount Daxueshan in Taichung and the Toucheng Farm in Yilan. These efforts extend from high-altitude forests to lowland settlements, gradually connecting areas from central Taiwan to the Northeast Coast to create a sustainable green network that combines carbon sequestration with ecological value, demonstrating ASE’s commitment to the long-term environmental goals.

In the Daxueshan Forest Area of Dongshi, Taichung, the ASE Environmental and Sustainability Foundation joined forces with the Taichung Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Bureau and Silicon Precision Industries to launch the “Forest Enterprise in Full Bloom – Daxueshan Tree Planting and Afforestation Initiative”.

Located at the 11-kilometer mark of Daxueshan Forest Road, the project adopted two hectares of forest land and restored a former abandoned orchard. Through the planting of nearly 4,000 native Taiwanese tree saplings, the initiative aims to enhance biodiversity, strengthen ecosystem resilience and gradually restore the forest’s ecological functions.

Led by SPIL’s Chief Administrative Officer Chien Kun-Yi, employees actively participated in the tree-planting activities. The program was further integrated academic expertise, with Professor Liu Wan-Yu from the Department of Forestry at National Chung Hsing University conducting an ecological tour and environmental education session. Through hands-on participation, employees gained a deeper appreciation of forest restoration and ecological restoration.

This afforestation project also embraces the concept of “local symbiosis.” In partnership with the Dajia River Indigenous Forestry Cooperative, which oversees both afforestation and long-term forest management, the initiative supports local employment opportunities while advancing ecological restoration efforts. By prioritizing manual weeding and environmentally-friendly management practices over heavy machinery, the project preserves existing healthy trees and microhabitats, helping to maintain the area’s ecological integrity. These efforts have already yielded encouraging results – within just a few months, wildlife monitoring cameras recorded sightings of several protected species such as pangolin, crab-eating mongooses and blue-eared pheasants.

The ASE Environmental and Sustainability Foundation noted that its collaboration with Toucheng Farm has successfully translated corporate resources into meaningful on-site initiatives. Through initiatives spanning afforestation, habitat restoration, biodiversity conservation and community engagement, the partnership established a sustainable model that integrates environmental, social, and economic values.

The “Forests, Rivers, Villages, and Seas” initiative is more than an ecological restoration project – it represents an integrated approach to environmental stewardship. By aligning its efforts with ESG principles, the Foundation seeks to create lasting positive impact and serve as a catalyst for the well-being of both nature and society.

From forest restoration on Mount Daxueshan to strengthening ecological connectivity at Toucheng Farm, the ASE Environmental and Sustainability Foundation is taking tangible actions to address the interconnected challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Looking ahead, the Foundation will continue to collaborate with industry, government, academia, and local communities to scale nature-based solutions, enhance ecosystem resilience, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Taiwan.
